Moxabustion

Moxibustion is a traditional healing technique that involves the burning of dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), specifically Chinese mugwort, near or on specific acupuncture points. This aromatic, flowering plant is ground into a fluffy, burnable substance known as moxa, which can be formed into cones or rolled into cigar-like sticks.

The purpose of moxibustion is to warm the meridians, stimulate the flow of Qi (vital energy), and promote healthy blood circulation. It’s especially helpful in conditions related to cold, stagnation, or chronic deficiency in the body.

Types of Moxibustion

There are several traditional methods of applying moxa:

Direct Scarring Moxibustion: A small cone of moxa is placed directly on the skin and burned until it blisters, often leaving a scar. This method is rarely used in modern practice.

Direct Non-Scarring Moxibustion: The moxa is also placed on the skin, but is removed before it burns deeply — allowing warmth to penetrate without damaging the skin.

Indirect Moxibustion (the most commonly used):

A moxa stick is held just above the skin or near an acupuncture needle to gently warm the area. This method is safe, non-invasive, and highly effective, often used to support digestion, immune function, fertility, and pain relief.

Moxibustion is frequently used alongside acupuncture to enhance therapeutic results, especially when there is a need to tonify, warm, or move energy in the body.

My wife was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer almost 2 years ago and we have seen a significant turnaround in her response to the chemotherapy and immunotherapy that she has been receiving for over a year and a half year with only slight changes but after starting with Atlanta Integrative and Internal Medicine, we have seen her numbers drop, many of the tumors she had when we started with them are now gone and the remaining tumor she has is down by 85%. The entire team is incredible and does whatever they can to help you in your time of need and I cannot recommend them enough.

Dr. Cardwell totally changed my life! He helped me return to a normal immune system & life after living in a house with mold. It took time/driving but it was so worth it! I can confidently say I’ve never met a doctor that has cared so much and helped with every health issue with patience and vast knowledge. He is a true gem and I am so grateful to him and Atlanta Integrative & Internal Medicine. They are all so warm and lovely for IVs, etc and make you feel like family. It’s how visiting the doctor should be!

After a bout of strep, I developed a rash and went to both my GP and derm who each prescribed me oral and topical steroids. Topical helped while using, but it would come back when I stopped and I was diagnosed with psoriasis. I went to AIIM and saw Jessica Caspar, APRN. She suggested ozone IVs and gave me ozonated olive oil. Within a few days of using the cream, my skin looks dramatically better! I am very hopeful and glad to not be relying on steroids. Highly recommend Jessica!

This has been a good experience. Dr. Patel is kind and takes time to explain things. I have learned more about my health here than at any other time in my life. The only downside is that all expense is out of pocket.

Dr. Cardwell has been treating me for the past five years. He is by far one of the best doctors I have seen. His level of compassion and the time he takes with his patients is something you very rarely see these days. I have some complicated issues and he has spent a lot of time researching what issues I am experiencing to help find a cure. I would recommend Dr. Cardwell and his staff to anyone.
