Autism Spectrum Disorder
While there is no single definitive cause or cure for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), research and clinical experience show that targeted interventions can reduce symptoms and address underlying contributors in many individuals.
Biomedical interventions are one piece of the care puzzle and are often used alongside speech therapy, behavioral therapy, sensory integration, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. Because every person on the spectrum is unique, a systematic assessment and personalized treatment plan can help determine which interventions are most effective.
Biomedical and Integrative Approaches
Dietary Interventions
Dietary changes are often one of the first and most impactful steps in supporting individuals with ASD. Shifting from a standard American diet to targeted approaches—such as gluten-free and casein-free eating—can improve both physical and behavioral symptoms.
- Allergy and Sensitivity Testing – Identifying and removing problematic foods (including common allergens) can reduce inflammation, digestive discomfort, and neurological symptoms.
- Nutritional Supplementation – Many individuals on the spectrum have unique metabolic and genetic needs that require higher amounts of specific nutrients. This can include:
- Vitamins & Minerals – B6, B12, D, E, folate, CoQ10, calcium, magnesium.
- Amino Acids – Tyrosine, phenylalanine, GABA.
- Fatty Acids – DHA, EPA, GLA for brain and nervous system support.
Genetic & Metabolic Considerations
Methylation Disorders
Methylation is a critical biochemical process affecting DNA expression, brain function, detoxification, and cellular metabolism. Methylation imbalances are common in ASD and can be supported through targeted nutrients such as methylated B vitamins, minerals, and co-factors.
Mitochondrial Dysfunction
Mitochondria produce the energy every cell needs. When mitochondrial function is impaired, symptoms may include low muscle tone, fatigue, poor detoxification, hormonal imbalances, seizure disorders, and increased infection risk. Supporting mitochondrial health through nutrition, antioxidants, and lifestyle changes can improve overall function.
Gastrointestinal (GI) Support
Many individuals on the spectrum experience digestive issues, which can impact nutrient absorption, behavior, and quality of life.
- Probiotics & Digestive Enzymes – Help balance gut microbiota and improve digestion.
- Addressing Dysbiosis – Managing bacterial overgrowth, yeast imbalance, or other GI infections can reduce symptoms like gas, bloating, constipation, or diarrhea.
- Symptom-Driven Dietary Adjustments – Avoiding foods that trigger abdominal pain, swallowing difficulties, or other discomfort can lead to rapid improvement.
Detoxification Support
The body’s ability to detoxify can be affected by both genetic differences and environmental exposures. In ASD, reduced detox capacity or increased toxic burden may contribute to symptoms.
- Assessment – Testing for heavy metals, chemical exposures, and detox pathway function.
- Support – Using nutrition, antioxidants, binders, and gentle detox protocols to reduce the toxic load.
Additional Interventions
Because ASD is multi-factorial, biomedical care may involve collaboration with specialists in gastrointestinal, endocrine, neurological, genetic, metabolic, and psychological fields.

My wife was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer almost 2 years ago and we have seen a significant turnaround in her response to the chemotherapy and immunotherapy that she has been receiving for over a year and a half year with only slight changes but after starting with Atlanta Integrative and Internal Medicine, we have seen her numbers drop, many of the tumors she had when we started with them are now gone and the remaining tumor she has is down by 85%. The entire team is incredible and does whatever they can to help you in your time of need and I cannot recommend them enough.Posted on Google![]()

Dr. Cardwell totally changed my life! He helped me return to a normal immune system & life after living in a house with mold. It took time/driving but it was so worth it! I can confidently say I’ve never met a doctor that has cared so much and helped with every health issue with patience and vast knowledge. He is a true gem and I am so grateful to him and Atlanta Integrative & Internal Medicine. They are all so warm and lovely for IVs, etc and make you feel like family. It’s how visiting the doctor should be!Posted on Google![]()

After a bout of strep, I developed a rash and went to both my GP and derm who each prescribed me oral and topical steroids. Topical helped while using, but it would come back when I stopped and I was diagnosed with psoriasis. I went to AIIM and saw Jessica Caspar, APRN. She suggested ozone IVs and gave me ozonated olive oil. Within a few days of using the cream, my skin looks dramatically better! I am very hopeful and glad to not be relying on steroids. Highly recommend Jessica!Posted on Google![]()

This has been a good experience. Dr. Patel is kind and takes time to explain things. I have learned more about my health here than at any other time in my life. The only downside is that all expense is out of pocket.Posted on Google![]()

Dr. Cardwell has been treating me for the past five years. He is by far one of the best doctors I have seen. His level of compassion and the time he takes with his patients is something you very rarely see these days. I have some complicated issues and he has spent a lot of time researching what issues I am experiencing to help find a cure. I would recommend Dr. Cardwell and his staff to anyone.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
